CLASSIC CHAMPIONS – 1997 – Rub of the Green

THERE was so much history around this Classic that Trevor Green finally triumphed in.

The 26-year-old Adelaide welder won the 25th anniversary of the GASC which was a tough one for the Premier club as heavy rain washed away racing at 10.15pm on Sunday night after a severe thunderstorm contributed to a power failure at the venue.

History was about to be created as this was the first time in 25 years that the Sunday night had been lost to weather.

A hot and sunny Monday afternoon greeted drivers and fans that saw Green become an unlikely but deserving winner aboard the family’s low budget red number four car, which was co-founded by his brother Stephen and Darryl.

After a successful career as a Speedcar driver Green was in his first full season of sprintcar racing and was overcome with emotion as he scored his greatest win in his first ever Classic. He leapt from obscurity and defeated two of the country’s best in Skip Jackson and Garry Rush.
